Course Description: Bioethics is the branch of moral philosophy (ethics) that studies the moral character of acts regarding the generation, development and care of human beings. Bioethics draws important considerations from Catholic moral theology which fosters a culture of life. The course deals with the foundations of bioethics and ethical controversies raised by advances in medicine and biology. Taught by a priest who is also a doctor, course topics include: principles of medical ethics, competing ethical systems, the principle of the double effect, stem cell research, reproductive technologies, and other critical contemporary medical concerns.
